BIG SPRING — Operations manager Dave Maher said when he started working at ALON USA, the idea of learning how everything operated was daunting; however as he drove CBS 7 around the Big Spring refinery, he knew the plant like the back of his hand.
“It’s a feeling of accomplishment and doing that here with a great group of people, is just a very good feeling,” Maher said.
In oil field country, he said a lot of people don’t know what goes on at the refinery because they’re focused on the oil field production, not what happens afterwards.
“This facility is one of many in the country, but not very many around here,” Mahr said. “We take the crude oil and turn it into products.”
“85 percent of what we make here is gasoline, diesel and jet fuel,” said Jeff Brorman.
The crude tower takes 73,000 barrels of crude oil every single day, splitting the oil into 6 different parts.
“Like a raw gasoline, to a raw diesel stream, to the very bottom, which is actually asphalt,” explained Maher.
Refinery Manager Jeff Brorman says ALON USA is proud to have their refinery in Big Spring.
“It’s the only one left in the Permian Basin,” said Brorman. “That’s the good thing about this refinery, it’s in a good location.”
“We have a big advantage there, being on top of the oil field, Maher added.”
With the location means being involved in the community: Brorman wears two hats during Funtastic Fourth, with ALON USA as a title sponsor, and helping to run the event with his wife, Christy.
Brorman said 35,000 people attended last year’s event.
“It’s a way for us to bring entertainment to Big Spring,” concluded Brorman.
